RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS – SPECIAL BIRTHDAY

SPECIAL BIRTHDAY

When I was growing up at home, my mother always made it a big deal when it was your birthday. She made it a very special day for you. Mom made the best and biggest birthday cakes. You received lots of birthday presents, and I remember you could invite as many friends as you wanted to your birthday party! Now as an adult, I still look forward to my birthday with anticipation. I look forward to celebrating with family and friends.

Even though I was dreading turning 60 Sunday, I was still looking forward to celebrating my birthday with my family and friends. And celebrate I did, actually for three days! It all started at work on Friday, we always celebrate birthdays at work. Since my birthday fell on a Sunday, Kris ordered cupcakes from Isaiah Tuckett and we had a small party at work on Friday.

Facebook has become a place to wish your friends a Happy Birthday. So after Maynard posted our picture of our little celebration at work on Facebook Friday, people assumed it was my birthday Friday and the happy birthday greetings started coming in.

Saturday, Roxie and I attended Monroe Crossing at the Prairie Arts Center. I am not a big bluegrass listener or fan, but this group is a bunch of talented musicians. It’s fun to see them play their instruments. Lisa from Monroe Crossing got word from Maynard that I was turning 60 Sunday. So Lisa called me out of the audience and had me come up front as they sang happy birthday to me and the banjo player who was also celebrating a birthday. Then we were told since it’s your birthday we need to do the chicken dance. So the banjo player and I did the chicken dance as fast as we could.

Sunday we went to church, and Pastor Eric thought it was funny during the announcements to show a funny video regarding turning 60 years old. I will remember this Maynard and Pastor Eric!

After church was my favorite part of the day. My family gathered at our house to celebrate grandpa’s 60th birthday.  It helps when your best friend makes the best ribs around. We got a roaster full of ribs from Dan Tuckett, and his son Isaiah made some more birthday cupcakes for me. We had a great lunch after church.

The grandkids couldn’t wait for grandpa to open his presents. They all gathered around me as I opened some amazing presents. My grandson Zane made me an awesome birthday card. Very colorful card, with him practicing cursive, and it even had a math equation for me to figure out. Zane is already a math whiz at 8 years old, and had me figure out what the square root is to make 60 years old, or something like that.  I didn’t know how to do that. He thought it was funny.

I received a bright Hawaiian shirt for our trip to Hawaii coming up in October. My granddaughter Adelyn made me a bracelet out of rubber bands. My granddaughter Gretta gave me a long hug and told me she loved me.

My son Brandon took all my blogs that I have written this year and made it into a book. I will blog about that book on Wednesday. I have a story to tell why he made my blogs into a book. So something to look forward to on Wednesday.

Celebrating birthdays are special times. I thank all my family and friends that have wished me a happy birthday! I feel the love.

RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS – SUNDAY IS COMING

SUNDAY IS COMING

I’m giving everyone a heads up. Sunday is a big day for me.

I will be 60 years old this Sunday. I am not handling thinking about turning sixty very well. What is it about milestone birthdays? 20, 30, 40, 50 years old. I consider myself a pretty stable person. I know some of you will disagree with that statement.

I can handle just about anything that is thrown at me. I handle stressful situations well. When bad or terrible things happen to me I think I handle them as good as anybody would. I think I’m a real positive person, I look at the good in situations. It takes a lot for me to get upset. I don’t get flustered very often. I don’t worry.

But this turning 60 on Sunday is messing me up. I don’t know what it is about milestone birthdays with me. I remember turning 20, 30, 40, and 50 years old, and I’m having the same feelings.

I know most of you take big number birthdays in stride, no big deal. I can hear some of you saying “it’s only a number” “life goes on” “grow up” and that’s ok.

I do NOT want to be 60! But it’s better than the alternative I guess.

I am a 20-year-old, stuck in a 60-year-old body. My mind says I’m 20, but my body has been telling me I am 60. Heart issues have made me think about enjoying life more. Broadcasting high school sports and hanging around high school students over the years have really helped me feel young. I like that.

I just calculated how many days it will be since I was born and on Sunday it will be 21,801 days. Not including the 9 months I was in my mother’s womb. So a really good guess is that my heart has been beating over 22,000 days come Sunday. That’s a long time. In 1957 Dwight Eisenhower was President. Number one song in America was All Shook Up by Elvis and a gallon of gas was 24 cents. The average household income $5500. Things have changed in 60 years.

So Sunday will come and go. I’ll spend it with family and friends and “celebrate”.  Come Monday I will be just fine. I just laughed, because my last blog was titled “Enjoying Life” which I am. But now I blog about how I have anxiety about turning 60…Life is sure funny.
