RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS – DAD

dad

It is Father’s Day today and as always I think of my dad on this day! I was only thirty-five when he died. My dad died when he was sixty-five, relatively young yet. I’m sixty years old now and to think in five years I will be the age my dad was when he died. It has been twenty-five years since he left us. I was present when he had his heart attack at his desk at work. It was the worst day of my life. The images of that day are still engrained into my mind clearly. I don’t know why this is, but when I think of my dad I think of that day he died and left us. When I think of him I should be thinking immediately about what a terrific father he was, but instead my mind takes me to that terrible day, Oct 12th 1993.

So today I choose to think about the dad that loved and cared deeply for his family and friends. His name was Carrell. He provided for his family. Dad started a business with his two brothers in law in 1960. He was very proud of the success of the foundry that they built together. We produced manhole covers that you see in the streets that are all over the country. I worked in the family business for some thirty years.  I saw my dad every day at work. So our relationship was close. We spent a lot of time together.

My earliest memory of my dad is kind of weird. I maybe was 4 or 5 years old. My dad was a smoker and he would lay in his bed smoking and I would lay next to him watching the red glow of his cigarette in the darkness. Liking the smell of the cigarette and waiting for the red glow of the cigarette to appear when he took a puff. I told you it was weird! That was in the early 1960’s when it seemed like everyone smoked. I never have had the desire to smoke cigarettes and I’m thankful for that.

My favorite memory of my dad was the day we were at the cabin on Big Stone Lake in Ortonville. Dad was driving the boat and I was learning to water ski. I was in my early twenties. To make a long story short, I fell in the middle of the lake and could not get back up. After trying and trying I gave up. Meanwhile the ski rope got tangled in the propeller and we had a big mess. I was exhausted and here I was floating in the lake. Dad thought he would slide off the back of the boat to help me get the rope untangled from the propeller. I don’t know what he was thinking, but when he slid off the back of the boat he disappeared under water and never came back up to the surface. He wasn’t wearing a life jacket.  I desperately tried to reach for him under water and finally grabbed his arm pulling him to the surface. He almost drowned.

Now both of us big guys are in the water, and we have no ladder to get back into the boat! We are stranded in the water, in the middle of the lake! My brother Greg saw we were in trouble and took an inner tube and swam out to us. He was able to pull himself into the boat. We got the ski rope untangled and my brother towed dad and me behind the boat to the shore. We were like beached wales, completely exhausted! While lying on the beach we had mom, my wife Roxie and my grandmother hovering over us yelling at the top of their lungs at both of us for being so stupid! Dad and I laughed so hard we couldn’t breathe, we would look at each other laying on the beach and laugh harder.

That is my funniest and best memory I have of my dad. We told that story so many times over the years and each time crying with laughter.  I have many good memories of my dad. I loved him very much. He was a great father to all of us. I rarely saw him get angry, he was always kind to everyone, wanting to help anybody that had a need. Happy Father’s Day dad! Love you!

RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS – THE INTERVIEW

img_20180225_130756468

I have interviewed many people on the radio over the years. This past week seemed to be one interview after another. I absolutely love interviewing people and getting to know them. I have learned so many things over the years by talking with people on many different subjects. However, I still struggle with the interview process. Sometimes I fail as an interviewer and I always ask myself, how could I have asked better questions?

I have had some memorable interviews. Some went really well and some didn’t. I remember well interviewing Senator Amy Klobucher for the very first time. It was a number of years ago and I have interviewed her many times since. She was in Madison at Lund Implement. Maynard, my boss told me to go out to Lunds and see if I could get an interview with the senator. I didn’t have any time to prepare. While driving out to Lunds I started getting really nervous. I usually don’t get nervous, but I’m thinking she’s a US senator! She talks to the national press all the time. What if I ask a stupid question? Fear started to set in.

I had never met Senator Klobucher before, I listened to her little speech inside of Lund Implement about small business problems in rural Minnesota. After she was done, she mingled with the owners and employees and other people. How am I going to get an interview with her? I have my recorder in my hand ready to pounce when the opportunity arises! She has her entourage with her and they begin to leave. As she goes outside to get into her vehicle. I shout out “Senator Klobucher, I’m from the local radio station can I get a short interview with you?” To my surprise, she smiles at me and says “Absolutely!” Well that was easy. The interview went well, even though I’m sure she saw my hand shaking holding my recorder because I was so nervous. After it was done, I thought I had asked good questions and she made me feel like we were sitting in my living room just talking and having a conversation. The last time I interviewed her she called me by my first name. I thought that was pretty cool that she remembered me. Afterwards I got in my car and remembered I had a name tag on. Oh well!

I think in the last five days I have interviewed over thirty high school student/athletes. Now interviewing high school kids is a challenge to start with. I have done it enough over the years that I know what type of questions to avoid. Like questions that will get you a yes and no answer. That comes from experience.

Interviewing people is really an art. I always try to follow these guidelines. Make the person feel comfortable. Do your homework! Ask open ended questions. Allow for silence. Don’t interrupt and listen, listen and listen! So the next time you hear one of my interviews on the radio, feel free to critique me.

RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS -ASK ME ABOUT MY GRANDCHILDREN

grandkids

ASK ME ABOUT MY GRANDCHILDEN

I went to a number of graduation parties on Sunday. A common theme that was mentioned by parents was how fast those eighteen years went. That got me to think about my own grandchildren. How young they are now and just how fast the time will go until they graduate from high school. I appreciate the time I get to spend with my grandchildren. I cherish the moments with them. I have six amazing grandchildren and they are all so different and special.

There is no better feeling then when my grandchildren see me and start running towards me with their arms wide open hollering “Grandpa! Grandpa!” Then they jump into my arms or give me a long hug. Each of my grandchildren have done this and I love it. I hope it continues into the teenage years.

Broc and Callie live in Wichita, Kansas. We don’t get to see them as often as our other grandchildren who live close to us. I will be honest, it is hard not being involved in their lives on a regular basis. Missing Grandparents Day at school, sporting events, birthdays and other special moments in their lives is hard. Many families are in the same situation, and it is what it is. I am so thankful for technology because we can Facetime, but it’s not the same as being face to face.

Broc is our first grandchild and is eleven years old. When we are together, we enjoy shooting basketball in the driveway or playing Madden football. He’s a good kid who loves sports and is very knowledgeable about the NFL. He is on a traveling basketball team and is a very good basketball player. I love watching him play.

Callie is my sassy girl and nine years old. When she was younger I spent hours in her room playing dolls! She has an imagination and an attitude that I love. When she stayed with us two summers ago for three weeks, she loved cuddling with grandpa on the couch. She loves to Snapchat with grandpa now, and we stay in touch just about every day and I love it.

Adelyn is ten and lives in Montevideo. She is close by and we get to see her often. She is mature for her age; we share a love for Taylor Swift music together. I am amazed at all the songs she has in her head and can sing. She always smiles and loves life. Last fall, at one of her basketball games, she told me that I needed to start wearing Montevideo Thunder Hawk apparel. So they bought me a hat and t shirt.

Gretta is five and we call her “Hurricane Gretta”. As you can imagine she is on the go all the time, running from here to there and never sits still. She is fun to be around. She loves to do just about anything. Gretta just loves to have fun no matter what the cost, much like grandpa! I love her laugh and her zest for life.

Zane just turned nine years old and lives in St. Cloud. Zane is the brains of the family, smartest kid I know. He got that from his grandma, not me. He loves to play games that make you think. I remember last year when he asked me to play a game of chess. Umm…ok… I lost. He is amazing at playing Wheel of Fortune. In fact, all our grandchildren love to play board games, especially with grandma. Zane is big for his age and is growing by the inch, daily it seems. He is almost as tall as his grandma. He is very kind, and always says thank you.

Grandchildren are a blessing for sure. I said earlier I have six grandchildren. Actually, I have seven, we lost one in a miscarriage. I know for certain that I will see that grandchild one day in heaven. I look forward to that moment. I think of that baby often, whenever grandchildren are mentioned. I love all my grandchildren dearly and I hope that I live long enough to at least see all of them graduate from high school.

RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS -GRADUATION PARTY TIME!

graduation-party

GRADUATION PARTY TIME

It’s spring; farmers are in the field, spring sports are in full swing, and then there are graduation parties! I love going to graduation parties! I feel blessed and humbled to be invited to many of them. Every year, it makes me feel really special and grateful that the student thinks to invite the radio sports broadcaster. I know some students better than others, but I always feel honored to be invited.

When I receive their graduation invite in the mail it always makes my day. I sit down with a tablet and write out my schedule: Graduate, dates, times and addresses. Trying to plan how I will attend all the graduation parties is like planning a military assault. I really don’t know how teachers and coaches do it. They seem to always be running from place to place to make the graduation parties.

Some parties have been very memorable. A few years ago I went to a party that was amazing. Great decorations, best punch ever, and the graduate met me at the driveway and gave me a hug. I went to another one a number of years ago and the graduate took the time to introduce me to just about everyone in the house, the garage and even the barn! I just wanted to dive into the pulled pork sandwiches!

Another graduate once had a Chinese restaurant cater their graduation party! I love Chinese food, and it was awesome! For one of my son’s graduation party, we went to Subway and bought the super party subs! The word spread fast around town and people came to eat Subway sandwiches.

I know how mothers clean their house to prepare for graduation. I walked into a house once during the party and swiped my finger across the top of the door frame and proudly displayed my dusty finger to the mother. Needless to say I got slapped! It was a good laugh.

I remember another party I attended, when I walked into the garage and heard my own voice. A video of the state basketball game was playing and they edited my play by play with the video. That was very cool. When some of my cousins graduated, my uncle and his friends always roasted a full pig. I miss those days. One family has a tradition of serving root beer floats to everyone. They did that with every one of their children.

I am looking forward to saying “Congratulations!” and “Best of luck in the future” to many graduates in the next few weeks. It is a special time. I always have some athletes, parents and grandparents that I have close relationships with. I cherish those relationships. I follow the graduate as they go through college and see them become successful in the business world. Some get married and have children and are wonderful moms and dads. I always look back and remember them in high school and for some funny reason remember their graduation party!
