RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS – JOHN

JOHN

His name is John Millea. John is a writer for the Minnesota High School League. Have you heard of John’s Journal? That is him. He also appears regularly on WCCO radio. He does podcast shows as well. Appears on television during state tournaments. His Twitter account has almost 20,000 followers. He drives a red Toyota, with his caricature on it. John drives his Toyota across the state of Minnesota covering high school sports. John is a big deal if you follow high school sports.

John and I have become friends. We met a few years ago at state volleyball. I was covering the Minneota Vikings and sat next to John on press row at the Excel Energy Center. It was apparent to me from the start that John and I have a lot in common. We both have a passion for covering high school sports. We enjoy spending time with high school coaches, student athletes, referees, and parents. You might say we spend most of our time in high school gyms. We eat at concession stands often. His favorite are the pretzels with cheese and a Diet Coke.

I really enjoy my visits with John. His sense of humor is the best. He had to be a comedian in an earlier life. This past Saturday John was in the Montevideo gym covering section dance. I asked him to come on the radio with me and he agreed. Just before we were going to go live on the air, I told John that we were about to interrupt our Saturday afternoon polka show. He thought that was hilarious. So when we went on the air he immediately apologized to our polka listeners. You don’t mess with the Polka show on Saturdays. John tweeted about this and mentioned there might be a Philly-type riot because we interrupted the polka show.

John grew up in a small Iowa town and worked his way to Minneapolis as sports writer for the Star Tribune. He covered the Twins and Vikings. He also worked side by side with Sid Hartman editing his column for five years. How great would that job be working with Sid? John looks at his job now with the MSHSL as a real blessing. He doesn’t even call it a job. He gets paid for having a ball. That is how I feel about my job as well. I get paid for having fun.

As I mentioned, John writes John’s Journal for the MSHSL. He mentioned to me once that he looks for the story in a high school game. Everyone has a story to tell. The reason he was in Montevideo Saturday was that one of the Montevideo Gold Duster dancers has a prosthetic leg. Kristin DeJong has a story to tell. You can read about her in Johns Journal at www.mshsl.org It is a wonderful story. This is what John does and he does it very well. He works hard at his craft and puts in a ton of hours. I’m glad to call him my friend.
