RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS – ANIMATED MOVIES SUCK

ANIMATED MOVIES SUCK
The other night I took two of my grandchildren to see the movie Jumanji at the Grand Theater in Madison. I know that I am in the minority on this subject, but I do not care for all the animation that Hollywood is putting into their movies! I especially do not like the full length animated movies. It is like watching a cartoon! I actually have told many people this and am always ridiculed for my comments on movie animation.
When I go to the movies I like to see real people dealing with issues that humans have to deal with. I also love humor and want to laugh when I go to movies. And as long as I am at it, I like chick flicks! For the record I could be a movie critic with all the movies that I have seen over the years. So I started thinking if I could put together my top 20 favorite movies. I could prove that these movies are way better than any animated movie. So I wrote them down and really gave this a lot of thought. After looking at the list, I realized that these movies were really good movies and gave me confirmation that these movies are much better than any animated movie. So here are my favorite twenty movies.
20. An Officer and a Gentleman
19. Rudy
18. Back to the Future
17. Field of Dreams
16. Young Frankenstein
15. JFK
14. Saving Private Ryan
13. Julie and Julia
12. Mamma Mia
11. Forrest Gump
10. Animal House
9. Schindler’s List
8. Titanic
7. Billy Jack
6. The Social Network
5. The Shining
4. Kramer vs Kramer
3. Blazing Saddles
2. Christmas Vacation
1. Patton
I love these movies and watch them over and over again. As you can see, no animated movies made the list and they will never make the list. I have seen some of the animated movies with my grandchildren. You can say they are cute. You can say the animated movie has a great story. You will not change my mind. You know what makes an animated movie worse? If it is a musical! I feel like starting a petition to stop making animated movies. If I had lots of money I would start my own movie company.
Animated movies that I remember watching with my grandchildren are Ice Age, Monster University, Despicable me, Frozen, Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs, and the Secret Life of Pets. Those are the animated movies I care to remember. All terrible! So why don’t I care for animated movies? Because nothing is real. It is fantasy. It is basically a cartoon. What is funny is that my grandchildren know I don’t like animated movies. Now when they hear that a new animated movie is coming out, they make it a point to tell grandpa. After attending the animated movie with my grand-kids they always want to know what I thought of the movie, knowing full well what the answer is going to be.
I love my grand-kids, but Hollywood please stop making animated movies. Please!

RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS – PHILADELPHIA FANS

PHILADELPHIA FANS

Philadelphia fans at the NFC championship game at Lincoln Financial stadium crossed the line! This past week I had the chance to sit down and visit with Tate Streich of Madison. Tate is a member of the elite Vikings World Order organization. These are fanatic Vikings fans that have amazing Viking outfits and cheer on the Vikings. Tate said they have about 300 people in the group. You have to be voted in to be able to be part of the Vikings World Order. Tate was voted in during the season opener with New Orleans.

Tate was in Philadelphia for the game. What happened before, during and after the Vikings and Eagles championship game is almost impossible to describe.  I have seen the television news stories and read in newspapers and on social media how bad the Eagles fans were. Until you visit with someone that was directly involved, it is hard to believe that so many people can act like that.

The story is about how bad Eagle fans treated Minnesota Viking fans in the parking lot, in the stadium and outside the stadium after the game. If you were wearing Viking purple apparel, you were viciously attacked, both verbally and physically. It wasn’t just a isolated incident, or a few people. According to Tate, the assaults came from hundreds of Eagle fans, with police and security ignoring the physical and verbal onslaught. He was hit in the head with beer cans. Eagle fans were urinating on Viking fans, spitting, throwing food, and vulgar language! Disgusting!

I know that every NFL team have a few fans that are totally drunk and cause problems at stadiums. The Vikings have fans like that, but what happened in Philadelphia was that the Eagle fans were said to be numbered in the thousands that were causing havoc on Vikings fans.

I need to find another word for “fan”. These people are not Philadelphia “fans”. I am struggling for a word to describe them. Thugs comes to mind. I think I will go with that word. Thugs! Philadelphia thugs! I am upset about this.

I have attended away Gopher football games. I have been to Michigan, Iowa and Nebraska. I wore my maroon and gold Gopher apparel with pride. Sure I did receive some verbal abuse and booing at times while walking to the stadiums. But it was all in fun! Nothing that made me fear for my life like Tate experienced in Philadelphia. In fact, at Nebraska I took my seat just under the goal post wearing my Gopher pull over. An older gentleman sitting next to me welcomed me to Nebraska with a handshake. I was the only person wearing maroon and gold in that whole section of red Cornhusker apparel!

I think Philadelphia thugs should take lessons from Nebraska fans on how to conduct themselves at games.

RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS -MINNEAPOLIS MIRACLE

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - JANUARY 14: Stefon Diggs #14 of the Minnesota Vikings leaps to catch the ball in the fourth quarter of the NFC Divisional Playoff game against the New Orleans Saints on January 14, 2018 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Diggs scored a 61-yard touchdown to win the game 29-24. (Photo by Hannah Foslien/Getty Images)

MINNEAPOLIS MIRACLE

Last Sunday around 7 pm, I was sitting in my recliner watching the Vikings. My wife was in her favorite chair and on her iPad shopping or playing games. She is not a sports fan; it is just not her thing. Me however I live for sports, well maybe not soccer. I bleed purple and am a huge Vikings fan and have been since I can remember.

The Minnesota Vikings were playing the New Orleans Saints in Minneapolis. It was definitely playoff atmosphere at US Bank stadium. I had a good number of friends attending the game and I was enjoying looking at their posts on Facebook and Twitter. I had been sitting in my chair since 3 o’clock that afternoon watching football. By seven o’clock the Saints had just kicked a field goal to take the lead 24-23 with 25 seconds left in the game. The Vikings season was coming to an end.

I can’t tell you how upset I was with 25 seconds remaining in the game. The Vikings were leading 17 to 0 with 1:18 left in the third quarter. Then the roof fell in.  I’m going to give credit to Drew Brees and the Saints they fought back and played well in the fourth quarter. I am very vocal while watching the Vikings on television. I actually yell a lot at the Tv. From 6 to 7 o’clock my wife started to yell at me. She would say, “stop yelling” “calm down” “be quiet” “really.”

So here I am at 7pm, pouting, heart racing, blood pressure up and really upset that the Vikings are going to get beat and the season is over. I’m actually seething. My emotions are all over the place, I am sad, I am mad, and I am hurt. The Vikings have 25 seconds left to try and get into field goal range to win the game. Then it happens!

Keenum’s pass to #14 Stefon Diggs for the winning touchdown!! I jumped out of my chair and lost my ear piece because I was listening to the Paul Allen while watching the tv. Jumping up and down and yelling at the top of my lungs continued for about a minute! I could not believe what had happened. My wife sitting in her chair yelling at me “Calm down, you are going to have a heart attack!” There was a lot of yelling going on in our house at that moment.

One of the greatest moments in Vikings history. Also one of the greatest radio calls by Paul Allen and Pete Bercich. Since then I have put the touchdown radio call as my ringtone on my phone. I’ve been hearing it at least once a hour all week long. A Minnesota sports moment that ranks right up there with Kirby Puckett’s game six homerun! A miracle it was.

RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS -TALKING TO 8TH GRADERS

8th-graders

TALKING TO 8TH GRADERS

How much money do you make? What college did you go to? What don’t you like about your job? Did you have fun in college? Who’s the most famous person you have interviewed? Do you really like your job? Why do you like your job? Those were some of the questions that were asked of me by the 8th grade class at Dawson-Boyd high school. I have been asked the last couple of years to sit on a panel to come visit with the Dawson-Boyd 8th graders about a range of topics. Each student comes prepared with a question to ask each of us on the panel.

The panel consists of five adults, with varying college degrees. A banker, a 4-H leader, a nurse, a teacher and me, the radio guy. The purpose of this get together is to have the 8th graders learn a little bit about the variety of education and career options available. So, teachers Kelly Tufto, Nichole Swenson, Preston Schwegel, and Karen Anderson ask people in the community to come speak to the students. They picked us knowing we all have taken different career paths, and as to how we got to where we are today.

We shared our life lessons/life experiences with them. I found the students to be really interested in what we all had to say. They all asked very good questions. One question that I enjoyed answering was from a boy. He asked me when I was in 8th grade, what did I want to do when I grew up? My answer was to broadcast sports on the radio at the professional level. I wanted to broadcast Minnesota North Star hockey and Gopher football to be exact.  My idols were radio broadcasters Al Shaver of the North Stars and Ray Christenson of the Gophers.  It took me 30 some years to be able to put a headset on and broadcast sports on the radio. Yes, at the high school level and I love it. I haven’t made it to the professional level, but it is still a dream. I do thank God every day for my job of broadcasting sports on the radio.

My path to a broadcasting career wasn’t normal and I wanted to relay that to the 8th graders. Sometimes things happen during the course of your life that pulls you in another direction but stay working hard and pursue what you love to do.  My final advice to them was simple. Life is way more that pursuing money, material things or fame. Money isn’t everything, pursue what you love and want to do. If you like butterflies, somebody in the world will pay you too study butterflies. Work hard. Stay out of debt. Make good choices and be kind to people.

RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS – HAWAIIAN FOOD

image_2425

image_245HAWAIIAN FOOD

Hawaii was a trip of a lifetime for my wife Roxie and me last October. This was our first trip to Hawaii. Our daughter got married on Kauai, so that was the reason for our trip. I have blogged about our trip in detail but I have never talked about the food. As you can see by the pictures, I always snapped a picture of each meal while in Hawaii. These are just a few of them. For the most part I did enjoy the food in Hawaii. I always tried to order something on the menu that looked Hawaiian or was different then what I am used to

The pictures shown are some of my favorite foods that I consumed while in Hawaii. Let’s begin with one of my favorites: shaved ice! We had some friends tell us to make sure we visit Wailua Shave Ice on Kauai. Here is a link to their website. (www.wailuashaveice.com) What a unique place that was. Located in the town of Kapaii, located right off Kuhio Hwy. You walk up to an Airstream Camper, and all they sell is the shave ice. My wife and I shared the Lava Flow shaved ice because it was so big. I think it was only $6. We sat on some picnic tables they had behind the camper, along with the many chickens that run wild on the island. Each bite of the shave ice was heavenly.

By far my favorite food I ate in Hawaii was at Tiki’s Grill and Bar (www.tikisgrill.com) that was located in our Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel in Honolulu.  (www.astonwaikikibeach.com) This might surprise you with me being a meat and potatoes guy. My favorite was a fruit yogurt salad! Yes, I had two of them while we were there. It was a large pineapple, cut open sideways and filled with coconut yogurt, mixed fruits and covered with granola. It was amazing!

Other foods I remember were the pulled pork sandwiches, onion rings and a breakfast sandwich. Our luau buffet was fine, but nothing special. Raw fish is food I did not care for.  I tried it a couple of times, but couldn’t stomach it. We also ate at a Mexican restaurant, which was very expensive and my burrito was not good. One thing that surprised me was how much the Hawaiian people love Spam. Spam everywhere, and served in most restaurants. We stayed away from the McDonald’s and Burger Kings.

When we returned back home, the first thing I did was drink a cold glass of milk, I missed that. Plus, I put a good steak on the grill.
