RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS -DRIVING IN A SNOWSTORM

DRIVING IN A SNOWSTORM

Finally, it happened. A significant snow fall happened twice this week. After all it is the end of February and I have been waiting and waiting for a big snowfall.  I was a happy guy.  Actually it was the first time I used my snow blower. Purchasing my snow blower a few years ago was one of the best purchases I have ever made. I enjoy snow blowing.

However, a downside to all of this was that I happened to have been driving during the hard snowfall. Last Thursday I traveled to Tyler, Minnesota to broadcast the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks girls basketball playoff game with RTR. While leaving Madison around 2pm Thursday it wasn’t bad until I reached Canby and then it started to snow. By the time I reached Lake Benton along highway 75 the road was completely covered in snow. When I reached RTR high school in Tyler and parked in the parking lot it was snowing very hard. I thought to myself if this keeps up it is going to be a interesting drive home.

Now this might sound strange, but I actually like driving in a snow storm. I see it as a challenge. It is the competitive nature in me. I like a good challenge to see if I can make it to my destination. The basketball game was over and it was time to go home. After brushing about 4 inches of snow off my car in the parking lot, I took off from Tyler. As I drove out of Tyler I realized this is maybe not a good idea. Maybe I should just stay with some relatives that I have around Tyler. Driving on highway 14 from Tyler to Lake Benton was very difficult, going about twenty miles per hour. I could not see where I was on the road, and I think I only met one car in that seven mile stretch.

When I arrived in Lake Benton I considered just staying in the gas station parking lot overnight. It was very difficult to see with it still snowing so hard. But I continued along highway 75 north to Ivanhoe, the road was not plowed at all. From Lake Benton to Ivanhoe I think I met four or five vehicles, it seemed like I was the only person on the road. I called Maynard to see if there was a motel in Ivanhoe and asked him to check the radar for me. I’m glad I called him, he said he couldn’t find a motel in Ivanhoe and the radar looked like the snow was letting up around Canby. So I continued and he was right, by the time I reached Canby the snow had let up.  Still the highway was not plowed and had at least 6 to 8 inches of snow on the highway. I did finally get to the stop lights at the intersection of 212 and 75.  Highway 75 was plowed to Madison. I arrived home and it took me a little over two hours. It was a difficult drive, but kind of fun! I conquered the snow storm!!

I did the same thing last Saturday driving from Montevideo to Madison. Not as bad as Thursday, but still a good challenge. I was very thankful that my wife was not with me in the car. I would have had to drug her to keep her calmed down and quiet. Bring on the next snowstorm!!

RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS -STATE DANCE IS A FUN EVENT

STATE DANCE IS A FUN EVENT

State dance rocks!  So what did you think I was going to blog about? I have been in the cities covering the state dance competition since Friday morning. My mind hasn’t shut off yet from what seemed like one hundred miles per hour for two solid days, arriving at Target Center at 10am and not leaving till around 8pm on Friday and Saturday. I wouldn’t trade those two days for anything. I don’t even have a daughter in dance, but yet I feel like I do.  I am so proud of the LQPV-DB Shadow girls and coaches.

They went to state and came away with state runner-up in jazz and high kick! Best finish is school history. So exciting for them and all of us who follow the Shadows. All I can say is how much fun state dance is. Going to a state tournament is always a fun time for families, the schools and communities. I would like to share some of my experiences this past weekend at state dance.

I have been asked many times, why do I cover dance on the radio? It is not a play by play sport.  My answer is simple. The girls need to be recognized, like any other athlete at school. That is what they are athletes. Amazing athletes, all of them. They work hard at what they do. They are very passionate about their sport. Radio is a tool to use to promote the sport of dance and recognize the girls. That is why I am there. Most of my broadcasts deal with interviews and giving updates on who is dancing and the results.

My broadcast partners are a Shadows dad and Shadows mom. Ken Franzky and Dee Dee Schommer. Kens daughter Kyndall is a freshman and Dee Dee’s daughter Aaliyah a tenth grader. Ken and Dee Dee added so much to the broadcast with their insights on dance. Ken really does his homework and knows his stuff about how scoring works and is a numbers guy. He is very passionate about the sport. Dee Dee really gives us a mother’s perspective. She is very articulate and does such a good job of telling us what each girl is like. Dee Dee to is just passionate about dance.  Fun to broadcast with both of them.

I asked a few Shadow alumni to join me on the broadcasts. Madeline Aafedt who was the only senior on the team last year and has a sister dancing. And Victoria Zinda, who was a captain a few years ago. While visiting with both of them on the radio, I could see tears in their eyes as they talked about their time as a Shadow and what it meant to them. Kylie Schuelke joined me on Saturday, and she talked mostly about the hard work you put in, and how it was all worth it. Memory’s she will carry with her for life. Kylie’s college friend Kelly was also on the radio with me and danced for Fridley and she is now a dance judge.  Always fun to visit with former Shadows.

Josie Munsterman, Ashtyn Oie and Riley Jo McCoy showed up between prelims and finals to talk about their excitement about dancing in the finals. Greg McCoy shared his story about how many family members of his are participating in dance. Kristin DeJong a Montevideo Gold Duster put the headset on and helped broadcast some updates with me and tell us about her story of dancing with a prosthetic leg. Kristin did an awesome job on the radio.

Coaches Lisa Johnson, Hannah Johnson and Sara Norman are always so great at giving me their time. I know they are so busy at state and have so many things to be thinking about. But yet always have time for me to do an interview with them. All of them are great people and coaches.

My favorite moments were visiting with family members and the girls in the concourse area of Target Center after the girls placed runner-up both evenings. Seeing everyone smiling and lots of picture taking. Giving the five seniors a Neon Needles player of the game t-shirt and Subway value meal is a special moment for me. It is a moment you soak in. Celebrating a big accomplishment after setting goals earlier in the year. The atmosphere at state dance is really amazing. State dance is a fun event.

RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS – PUPPY LOVE

images

PUPPY LOVE

Today is Valentine’s Day. Two things come to my mind whenever I think of Valentine’s Day. I was in the fifth grade and the night before Valentine’s Day my mother would give me Valentine’s cards to sign for my classmates at school. I had a huge crush on a girl named Tammy.  I remember making her Valentine’s card special. The next day I couldn’t wait to give her my Valentine card and receive a card from her. I wrote all over her card and colored it and made it a big deal. I remember getting her card with excitement. She didn’t even sign her card, it was just a plain valentine card and it didn’t even say “Will you be my Valentine”. She didn’t even smile at me when giving me her card. It was like I had a disease. I was crushed and hurt. She doesn’t like me! I hate Valentine’s Day! Yes, I remember well what happened to me on that Valentine’s Day in fifth grade.

Fast forward to me in my forties and happily married. Now I am going to brag. I would not say I’m a romantic guy, but I try to be. Our church always held a Valentines banquet and it got to be a pretty big event over the years with well over one hundred people attending the banquet. It was a nice couples evening out. I was asked by the people who were in charge of the Valentines banquet if I would serenade my wife Roxie in front of everyone as part of the program. I said I would.

So I pondered about what to sing to her in front of everyone. Then it came to me. She is the biggest Donny Osmond fan I know. In high school she had all the Osmond albums, posters of Donny Osmond in her room, collected any teen magazine with Donny of the cover. Donny’s biggest hit was Puppy Love. So I decided to serenade my wife with the song Puppy Love. How fitting is that, since we started dating when we were freshman in high school.

I can’t tell you how many times I practiced singing the song Puppy Love in my car. I had a cassette tape of Puppy Love and played it over and over and over. Singing loudly in my car traveling down the road. I perfected it!

Puppy Love

Donny Osmond

And they called it puppy love
Oh, I guess they’ll never know
How a young heart really feels
And why I love her so

And they called it puppy love
Just because we’re in our teens
Tell them all, please tell them it isn’t fair
To take away my only dream

I cry each night my tears for you
My tears are all in vain
I’ll hope and I’ll pray that maybe someday
You’ll be back in my arms once again

Someone, help me, help me, help me please
Is the answer up above
How can I, oh how can I tell them
This is not a puppy love

Someone, help me, help me, help me please
Is the answer up above
How can I, oh how can I tell them
This is not a puppy love, not a puppy love

So at the Valentines banquet, Roxie had no idea what was about to happen. After a nice dinner the program began and the master of ceremonies asked Roxie to come up front. He sat Roxie in a chair facing the hundred some people that were in attendance. He said to her that we have a surprise for you. So the music started and I got up from my chair and walked toward the front where Roxie was sitting. While approaching her I started singing Puppy Love to her. Got down on my knee and held her hand and belted the song out the best I could. Her reaction was something I will always remember. Complete shock, and at first it was funny, but as I was ending the song with the words “This is not a puppy love, not a puppy love” The tears began to flow, she was overcome with emotions. We both cried and gave each other a long hug. Roxie will tell you that was thee most romantic thing I have ever done for her. She still talks about it. Every Valentine’s Day she reminds me of that moment.

My suggestion on Valentine’s Day is to give your loved one a hug and kiss and say I love you. It is that simple and a cheap thing to do. Actually you should do that every day. Happy Valentine’s Day.

RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS – JOHN

image_3430johns-journal-red-toyota

JOHN

His name is John Millea. John is a writer for the Minnesota High School League. Have you heard of John’s Journal? That is him. He also appears regularly on WCCO radio. He does podcast shows as well. Appears on television during state tournaments. His Twitter account has almost 20,000 followers. He drives a red Toyota, with his caricature on it. John drives his Toyota across the state of Minnesota covering high school sports. John is a big deal if you follow high school sports.

John and I have become friends. We met a few years ago at state volleyball. I was covering the Minneota Vikings and sat next to John on press row at the Excel Energy Center. It was apparent to me from the start that John and I have a lot in common. We both have a passion for covering high school sports. We enjoy spending time with high school coaches, student athletes, referees, and parents. You might say we spend most of our time in high school gyms. We eat at concession stands often. His favorite are the pretzels with cheese and a Diet Coke.

I really enjoy my visits with John. His sense of humor is the best. He had to be a comedian in an earlier life. This past Saturday John was in the Montevideo gym covering section dance. I asked him to come on the radio with me and he agreed. Just before we were going to go live on the air, I told John that we were about to interrupt our Saturday afternoon polka show. He thought that was hilarious. So when we went on the air he immediately apologized to our polka listeners. You don’t mess with the Polka show on Saturdays. John tweeted about this and mentioned there might be a Philly-type riot because we interrupted the polka show.

John grew up in a small Iowa town and worked his way to Minneapolis as sports writer for the Star Tribune. He covered the Twins and Vikings. He also worked side by side with Sid Hartman editing his column for five years. How great would that job be working with Sid? John looks at his job now with the MSHSL as a real blessing. He doesn’t even call it a job. He gets paid for having a ball. That is how I feel about my job as well. I get paid for having fun.

As I mentioned, John writes John’s Journal for the MSHSL. He mentioned to me once that he looks for the story in a high school game. Everyone has a story to tell. The reason he was in Montevideo Saturday was that one of the Montevideo Gold Duster dancers has a prosthetic leg. Kristin DeJong has a story to tell. You can read about her in Johns Journal at www.mshsl.org It is a wonderful story. This is what John does and he does it very well. He works hard at his craft and puts in a ton of hours. I’m glad to call him my friend.

RAYMO’S RAMBLINGS – SUPER BOWL IS TOO BIG

1110-u-s-bank-stadium-superbowl-52-getty-8

SUPER BOWL IS TOO BIG

I’m really not looking forward to watching the Super Bowl. I had no interest in watching or listening to the week long talk about the Super Bowl. I know it is in Minnesota and I will hear more about the Super Bowl because it is in my backyard. The Super Bowl is a real big deal. It is the biggest event of any kind in the world, outside of the Olympics.

In my opinion the Super Bowl and all of the events around the Super Bowl have gotten way too big. It has become a monster! It is a week long event, not just a Sunday football game. I get sick of all the talk on tv and radio, it seems like that is what everyone wants to talk about. I am a big football fan and I don’t want to come across as a Debbie downer but I am disliking the whole Super Bowl experience.

Lets just play the game without all the hoopla. When Sunday comes around you can have your Super Bowl parties with friends and family. I will watch the Super Bowl from my favorite chair. That is how I watch the Vikings every Sunday, in my living room and in my chair. By myself.

Did you know that the first couple of Super Bowls were not sold out. Tickets prices for the first Super Bowl were $12! In 1967 fans paid $12 to watch the Packers Bart Starr lead Green Bay to a 35 to 10 win over Kansas City. Sundays average ticket price is between $3000 and $5000! That is insane! Well I just purchased a Taylor Swift concert ticket for $150! I remember paying $25 to see Elton John in 1975.

I bet in 1967 nobody cared about the commercials, now the commercials are usually talked about just as much as the football game. My favorite Super Bowl commercials are always the funny ones. Like Betty White and the Snickers commercial or Ozzie Osborn 5G phone spot with Justin Bieber. Remember the E-trade baby? How about Pepsi’s Cindy Crawford commercial, wowza! I remember those commercials very well.

I have a number of friends down in the cities this weekend. I have absolutely no desire to be downtown Minneapolis during the Super Bowl. Fighting all the crowds and traffic. My living room is the perfect place to be on Sunday.

As far as the game goes, I pick Tom Brady and the Patriots to destroy the Eagles. Won’t even be close, it will be a blowout! This is all I care about during Super Bowl week and Super Bowl Sunday is the game itself. Ok, I might watch the commercials. So when kickoff happens, you can think about me sitting in my favorite chair in the comfort of my home, watching a football game.
