I HAVE A GOLF PROBLEM

I’ve already blogged about golf a couple of weeks ago when I covered the state high school golf tournament in Becker, Minnesota. But this blog is about how much I enjoy golfing even though I am really not good at it. You hear people say all the time, oh I’m terrible at that, or I’m just not good at that, but in reality they are good at whatever they are telling you about. Well I’m telling you that I’m really not very good at golf. You would think if you’re not good at something you would not do it often or you would stop doing it all together as to not embarrass yourself. But I keep on golfing.

I golfed in the annual Madison Health Care Services golf fundraiser, and what I’ve been trying to wrap my brain around is, why is it I had so much fun golfing on that Wednesday, yet most of my golf swings the ball is not going where I want it to go?

Slice left, slice right, tee shot doesn’t go past the ladies’ tee box, I accidently tee off from the ladies’ tee box, hence get teased by a number of women on the golf course that maybe I should wear a skirt next time. I putt about 10 feet past the hole, and I could go on, but for the sake of embarrassing myself further I will stop. And yet……. I was having so much fun! Why is that? Does this bother anyone else?

Well I will attempt to answer my own question. There might be a few reasons why I was enjoying myself so much yet not doing well at the sport of golf that day.

I enjoy being with the people I’m golfing with, Kris my coworker, and Antonio who works in Madison, but lives in Morris.  We were the Q92 team, we were teasing each other and giving each other tips on how to get better at golf. Kris is a good golfer, she’s a member of the golf course and on a league and loves to golf. We talked Antonio into golfing, it was one of the first times he had ever golfed. He was having fun to, especially driving the golf cart. He was hit by a golf ball from another golfer (not me) that day and was really lucky he wasn’t hurt badly. But we all laughed when we realized he was ok.

Another reason might be, its free! My employer pays for the golf fee and dinner. Dinner was catered by the Pantry, and very good as always, my favorite people! Also a chance to get out of the office on a beautiful day which is really nice and appreciated.  Being with and seeing other friends and community members on the golf course as well. We ran into some old friends in the club house that we haven’t seen in a few years.

Supporting the Madison Health Care Services, bidding on auction items, and buying raffle tickets. Always important to support local businesses and events. That makes you feel good.

Ok, I did have a few good golf shots, so allow me to brag. On hole #7 my second shot from about 160 yards out landed on the green and a few feet from the hole. Drained a 20-foot putt on #8. So I guess the really good shots I had outweigh all the bad shots and that is what makes golf the fun game it is. Being with good friends, supporting your community, drinks and good food, beautiful weather, laughs, and the game of golf makes an enjoyable day!
